Open Source Guides for the Enterprise from Linux

Open source guides, Linux Foundation

The Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization enabling mass innovation through open source, has released the first six in a series of Open Source Guides for the Enterprise, created to help executives, program managers, developers, attorneys and other decision makers learn how to best leverage open source.

Developed by The Linux Foundation in collaboration with the TODO Group, the initial guides cover the following topics:

  • Creating an Open Source Program, by Chris Aniszczyk, Cloud Native Computing Foundation; Jeff McAffer, Microsoft; Will Norris, Google; and Andrew Spyker, Netflix
  • Using Open Source Code, by Ibrahim Haddad, Samsung Research America
  • Participating in Open Source Communities, by Stormy Peters, Red Hat; and Nithya Ruff, Comcast
  • Recruiting Open Source Developers, by Guy Martin, Autodesk; Jeff Osier-Mixon, Intel Corporation; Nithya Ruff; and Gil Yehuda, Oath
  • Measuring Your Open Source Program’s Success, by Christine Abernathy, Facebook; Chris Aniszczyk; Joe Beda, Heptio; Sarah Novotny, Google; and Gil Yehuda
  • Tools for Managing Open Source Programs, by Chris Aniszczyk; and Jeff McAffer

“Today most software in any technology product or service is open source,” said Jim Zemlin, executive director of The Linux Foundation. “Just as projects are looking to create communities to sustain them over the long term, corporations are seeking to better understand how they can work with and contribute to open source. The new guides will help more organizations directly engage for the benefit of the broader community.”

“The first set of e guides draw on the experience of dozens of members of the TODO Group, who have provided invaluable knowledge to this project,” said Chris Aniszczyk, Executive Director of the Open Container Initiative, a Linux Foundation project. “The work that went into producing these guides will benefit countless individuals and organizations that are looking to improve their  program practices.”

Additional guides are planned for release. All are available on GitHub as well as The Linux Foundation website at https://www.linuxfoundation.org/os-guides.
